Say yes to a healthier you and explore fitness fun this month at the Norris Recreation Center in St. Charles where the park district team has created a calendar of opportunities to change up or start a new fitness routine.
“We know trying something new can be intimidating and we’re here to help you,” said Ande Masoncup, assistant superintendent of recreation at the Norris Recreation Center.
The fitness center offers something for all interests and ages, whether its swimming laps or group exercise classes, cardio machines and pickleball courts too.
For those looking for a new challenge, check out For the Love of Fitness. Lead by one of the park district’s certified wellness coaches, the new small group training program features weekly challenges that increase with intensity each week, Wednesday mornings from 7:30 to 8 a.m. Feb. 5-26. With classes at just 30 minutes, it’s a great way to jump start the day and try some new fitness moves.
If the thought of one-to-one training feels too intimidating, a group fitness class is a great option, Masoncup said. Working in a group can help individuals feel accountable and stick with a plan, in addition to the chance to make some friends along the way.
“You might meet an exercise buddy,” Masoncup added.
Already have a friend, drop-in daily admission is available and a great way to introduce your friend to the Norris Recreation Center. Additional fees may apply for classes, the pool and use of the pickleball and tennis courts. Membership is a great savings and comes with some fun perks too.
“We’ve had some of the pickleball players discover the value of a membership pays for itself in a few visits, instead of paying the daily admission and pickleball drop-in play fee,” Masoncup said.
Helping members make the most of their membership is part of the fun for the staff at the Norris Recreation Center and that’s why this year’s theme is Strive to Thrive in ’25, featuring activities and rewards for members. For example, members can share their year’s goal sheet to earn some NRC Bucks, which can be used toward discounts for programs or join the Winter Workout Wakeup in the month of January for a chance to win prizes.
Another fun class returning this winter is the Broga, a yoga class designed specifically for men, ages 12 and older. Lead by a male instructor, with mats and props provided, it’s a great opportunity to learn the basics of yoga and experience the benefits too, in the single day-program Saturday, Feb. 15.
“We had our first Broga last year and it was a success and some of the attendees have gone to other yoga classes,” Masoncup said.
For a more personal look at health and fitness, consider wellness coaching or nutrition coaching. Lead by the Norris’ certified coaches, the one-to-one wellness coaching can help individuals create a plan tailored to needs, interests and time focused on seeing results. The service is available to members and non-members.
Nutrition coaching can help with meal planning, building strong healthy habits and even helping adjust to new dietary changes. Has the doctor suggested reducing cholesterol or considering a gluten-free diet, the certified nutrition coach can help break down what that look like and provide a road map, added Masoncup.
There are classes for all ages and stages at the Norris, whether seeking swim lessons, tennis lessons or making a change in fitness routines, the Norris team is ready to show the benefits to membership, including the opportunity for members to earn two-months when they refer a friend.
“There’s so much you can do as a member,” Masoncup said. “We just want you to take that first step and get your foot in the door.”
