Community members are invited to create magical memories with their little one when they make music at upcoming St. Charles Park District programs.
Music and related activities are key for cognitive development in young children, said Kara Guizzetti-Reif, early childhood and preschool supervisor for the park district.
“The benefits of time spent singing and playing together stretch far beyond the walls of the classroom,” Guizzetti-Reif said. “Children’s brains are being activated for language development, social growth, emotional regulation, movement, math skills, and creativity, all while they are bonding with their caregivers.”
Even the littlest music maker can join in on the fun when the park district offers Music Together Family Class for children up to 5 years old. The nine-week program from Wee Heart Music, a provider of music and movement classes geared to children, will feature songs, dances and the opportunity to play musically together. A new song collection is introduced each semester. Siblings under 9 months are free.
“Our class lesson plan model uses both small and large movement, props such as balls, parachute and streamers and instruments like egg shakers, rhythm sticks and drums to reinforce tonal and rhythmic development as well as large and fine motor skills,” said Rhonda Sisson, owner of Wee Heart Music.
The next class schedule begins on Thursdays, March through May 22. Choose from these timeslots: 9:15 to 10 a.m., 10:15 to 11 a.m. or 11:15 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Another option is Baby Rock for those 3 months to 1 year old. Sensory experience along with stimulating music help engage young children, who will also be introduced to simple instruments and props to enhance the experience. Offered by Rock ‘n’ Kids, Inc. music school, this offering takes place from 11:20 to 11:50 a.m. Tuesdays, April 8 through May 20.
“Music is a creative outlet for children to begin imaginative play,” said Jamie Puffpaff, owner of Rock ‘n’ Kids Inc. “Besides bringing joy, music also helps enhance language skills, memory, problem-solving skills, and gives children a healthy outlet to express their feelings and connect with others.”
Also from Rock ‘n’ Kids Inc. comes Tot/Kid Rock for children 1 to 3 years old. Developmentally appropriate activities that include songs and rhyme as well as rhythm and will get everyone movin’ and groovin’. Classes for those 1 to 2 and a half years old will take place 9:45 to 10:25 a.m., while classes for 2- and 3-year-old children will take place from 10:30 to 11:10 a.m. Both are offered on Tuesdays, April 8 through May 20.
